Atlanta hosted the first annual US India Business Summit (UIBS) on May 10 & 11, 2010 at Cobb Galleria Center. The two-day event was first of its kind in Georgia and tagged “Growing Business and Promoting Entrepreneurship”.

Program Chair Mr. Ani Agnihotri

Chaired by Mr. Ani Agnihotri, the Summit showcased the growing partnership between India and the US. Presentation and discussion sessions included a wide-range of topics focusing on emerging business opportunities between the two countries. The Summit also provided networking opportunities between and amongst government officials and business executives.

Keynote speakers/dignitaries included Hon. Sonny Purdue, the Governor of Georgia; Hon. Meera Shankar, the Ambassador of India to the US; and Hon. Kenneth Stewart, the Commissioner of Georgia Department of Economic Development, amongst others.

But of course, the Summit couldn’t all be serious business; a well-organized evening program including an Awards Banquet and a Fashion Show coordinated by Kiran Agnihotri and Ritu Bansal provided the fireworks!

A sizable audience was treated to a two-hour Kathakali dance show this evening at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia. The event was announced in the media in advance and coordinated by Aparna Sharma, the Director of Aparna Dance Academy and her management team. Conducted by students of the Academy itself, the dance performances were incredible. Just tops and taps… It must have taken a large chunk of time, effort, and dedication on everyone’s part to perfect the art form and to put the shown on. It was just awesome from start to finish.

On the other hand, however, it was rather disappointing to me personally because a few minutes into the program, I was told by the organizers that no one but the hired gun was allowed to photograph the event(!). I respectfully obliged and put my gear down. The following were just some of the few I took before I was stopped. Enjoy the photographs but as always, respect the privacy of others.

The Office of Institutional Diversity of the University of West Georgia (UWG) in Carrollton presented a free screening of Sharada Ramanathan’s award-winning movie Sringaram: A Dance of Love on April 19, 2010. The event was organized by Deirdre Rouse of UWG (678-839-5400).

The Director answering questions from the audience

The Tamil movie with English subtitles was quoted as ”A Celebration of Womanhood, Culture and Freedom”. Sringaram won three national film awards, two state awards and represented Indian cinema in several international film festivals.

The storyline of the main character, a temple dancer otherwise known as devadasi, was about a search for her identity and her struggle to break free from the devadasi system she was born in.

The film won national awards in 2005 for Best Music Direction (Lalgudi Jayaraman), Best Cinematography (Madhu Ambat), and Best Choreography (Saroj Khan). Tamil Nadu state awards were given for Art Direction (Thota Tharani) and Costume Design (Rukmini Krishnan).

The Director assembled a talented team of artists to put the movie together although it seemed at times like editing could have used some help. The Director introduced the film to the audience of about three dozen and answered questions after the show. It’s a period movie of the pre- and post-colonial India (1920s and 1950s).

More than anything, I liked the cinematography and costume design aspects. Madhu Ambat done a great job capturing emotions of the characters and I felt like Rukmini Krishnan deserved a national award as well for her talents in designing the period costumes. Should be rated R when commercially released in the US.

3.5 stars out of 5.0

World Thinking Day is an annual celebration and according to the 2010 Resource Guide, it not only gives Girl Guides and Girl Scouts a chance to celebrate
international friendships, but is also a reminder that
Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community— one of 145 countries in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Troopers dressed in traditional Indian clothes, welcomed visiting troopers, danced, waved India flag, gave out samples of specially made chicken curry and sambar and generally had a good time…

One of the four world centers, known as Sangam, is located in Pune, India. The other three are located in Mexico, Switzerland, and England. “Staffed by volunteers and paid international staff, the world centers offer Girl Scouts and Girl Guides a comfortable, inexpensive, and safe place for short stays or long-term accommodations, seminars, trainings and international events. Members of Girls Scouts of the USA and their families are encouraged to visit the centers, meet girls from other countries and build lasting friendships.” – according to the Girl Scouts website.

My friend Monty and I were on the downtown Connector at about 5:10 PM on 1/18/2010 when the animal ran past us with a large number of cops in hot pursuit. Being the passenger, I was able to grab my camera and immediately start taking pictures as he was chased by cops on the ground and news reporters in choppers. I took this shot right after he was captured at the Grady Curve! Hot stuff!! See the AJC posting here
